The Kerry Heritage Award 2020, was presented to Bryan MacMahon, in acknowledgement of his exhaustive research into the Great Famine in Tralee and North Kerry, which culminated in the publication of a book of the same name in 2017. Bryan has also extensively documented the lives of many great Kerry men and Kerry women, whose stories would otherwise have gone largely untold.
Down through the years he has been a prolific contributor to both the Journal of the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society and The Kerry Magazine. In fact, he first contributed to the Journal, 30 years ago, in 1991. Since then, he has contributed three additional articles to the Journal and 12 articles to the Magazine, with a 13th pending. Bryan has also lectured on a number of occasions to our society.
Bryan a native of Ballyheigue, is a retired teacher, now living in Dublin.
This year’s presentation was quite unlike any of those, which preceded it, in that due to the Pandemic it was made online, just prior to the Society’s AGM, on January 26, 2021.
